(surrounding grades will be considered. I don’t know if this will “count” for highschool credit, that would be up to you as the homeschooling parent)

Required Materials:

1) Please send your child with a camera they can independently use. This can be a phone, tablet, point-and-shoot, or DSLR—whatever works best for your family. I encourage you to consider factors like parental controls and the potential for damage when choosing a device. While I will guide students in responsible camera use during class, I trust that you know your child best and ask that you select a camera you feel comfortable with them handling before, during, and after class. 2) The end-of-year photo book printing will be your responsibility and can be done at a price point of your choosing. Book or print quality will not influence the final grade, as long as I can clearly see the photos.

Description:

In this class, your child will walk away with an increased confidence behind a camera and a robust understanding of what makes a great photo. We’ll explore key photography concepts, and engage in photo scavenger hunts, group projects, and individual creative challenges. We will study and have meaty conversations about the work of other professional photographers. Almost every class will include hands-on photography practice, blending formal learning and discussion with indoor and outdoor shooting opportunities. They will get lots of real-world practice. Along the way, students will learn how to critique and receive constructive feedback in a way that is honoring.

This course is designed to be a creative and challenging introduction to photography, with weekly photography assignments and monthly photojournalistic reports. The year will culminate in an exciting photo documentary final project, where your student will choose a theme, meet editor requirements, and compile a body of images to tell a story in their own photo book for presentation to the class.

It’s a perfect fit for older students who have a keen interest in photography or art. Absolutely no prior knowledge or experience is needed, just a maturity to learn.

I’m an award winning and published photographer who ran my own photography business for a decade. But I almost never pursued photography at all. In high school, my spirit was crushed when my photography teacher bombarded me with the science but never gave me space to explore the art. It wasn’t until my early 20s, when my father handed me a camera on a trip to a National Park, that I realized I was good at it after all.

That perspective shapes how I teach young photographers today. I believe students need to understand the art before the science. They need the freedom to experiment, tinker, and develop their own creative eye before getting too lost in technical details. This class is designed to give them that space and enough scaffolding to get going.
